#6 // Anna Liisa // Kaleidoscope

This studio has been a challenge in terms of thinking about place.

As an architecture student it is sometimes easy to get hung up on numbers and masterplans. To forget about the story. Without a doubt, numbers and plans are important. However, without the "softer side" of architecture - the cognitive experience, the history of place - the picture remains incomplete.

This is a storytelling game.
I have prepared fragments of the story, scenes from and thoughts concerning Lofoten. They give possibility for endless combinations, as if looking through a kaleidoscope.

DAV - NOTHING HAS AN END

Materiality changes – all the time and we can not do anything about it.
The whole materialities are in a constant change.
Human influence changes this constant change of materiality.
No matter how much time passes – nothing will ever be gone.

SNOW
WOOD
PLASTIC
STONE
HUMAN BODY

These five materialities should be analyzed closer in this DAV.

HUMAN BODY
The human body changes all the time – it gets older and after a while the organs stop working and it is called dead. After time it can turn into ground or - including the human influence - it can turn into ash and smog.
The substance changes and we can change the substance,
but we will never get rid of it.
The thick black line represents the human influence during the process of change of the different materialities.
Some materialities cross the black influence-line:
for example WOOD-> if we burn it, it turns into ash and smog. If we don’t, it turns into ground naturally.
Some materialities – like SNOW or STONE cross the human-influence-line, but they are cutted, which represents the possibility for a human influence, but the change might and will also happen without it. ( Snow -> Water -> Steam )
PLASTIC is chosen the represent to „unnatural“ materialities. It crosses the human-influence-line many times, which shows that we can use and change it, but will never get rid o fit again.
After 450 years a plasticbottle turns into ground again. With human influence it can turn into ash and smog.

Nothing is ever gone. Nothing is ever lost. No matter how much time passes.

Find My Lofoten

If you need a 2 minutes break from your reorientation working you can see how many locations you can you identify in this little film (like your former home in Fredvang at 0:45).. (Post your findings in the comments..!)
